Keynote problems

WIth the new Mavericks update, I am having trouble adding pictures to keynote. If i drag a photo over from a desktop file, it completely fills the screen of that slide and i cannot alter the size of it. What am i doing incorrectly or how can i add pictures like i was able in the previous version of keynote?
