On my MBP, there is a circular logo on the F4 key. However, I saw that the newer MBP’s have 4 or 6 squares on the F4 key. Can someone please tell me when this was introduced? What year and/or month?

10/2011. It is for Lion. Launchpad or something stupid like that.

Yup, the circle's for dashboard, the squares are for launchpad. I also don't really see the point of it when there's a gesture for launchpad and not one for dashboard...but oh well.
