with a few modifications could someone put a sack of potatoes in the front seat and set these gems off on their own cross country voyage. Could get get 10 or 15 of them and have a race.

Wow. I don’t care if a car has autopilot, I would never not remain behind the wheel. Technology do go bad at times, as anything man made can mess up.

No sympathy for the guys, but I feel bad for their families. This is firmly in the play stupid games, win stupid prizes category.

The EV car fire issue will be a a big issue going forward. It takes a confluence of events to happen, but when lithium ion does have thermal runaway, and burns it is very scary.

What is even scarier for first responders, tow truck drivers, and wrecking yards is that the fire may not happen immediately. If the cells are damaged in the right way it may be minutes or days later that the fire starts.

This means responding to an accident involving an EV is a scary proposition since the car may ignite at any time, including on the truck transporting it, or when it is is parked later on. I read somewhere that they were considering making trucks with what is essentially dunk tanks to safely transport EVs after they crash.

I am thinking enterprising EV owners could have a Mad Max cross country race.
sack of potatoes in the front seat and let the car be free

there appears to be lower than expected interaction between the auto driven car and driver
