Knights of the old republic 1 console issue

Hi! I'm having a problem with the console command button in kotor1. I fould the swkotor file from the correct folder (not steam folder) and wrote enablecheats=1 below game options. Still the console command wont work. Can anyone tell me why? Has anyone else had this kind of issues with the game?
