Until today, I used to be one of those "jailbreaking only costs a minuscule amount of battery life" people (and jb-ing itself is minuscule indeed), but I mustve installed some app that just killed (well, used up quickly) my iphone4's battery. The thing was hot to the touch, and burning nearly 20-25% per hour.

Anyhow, I restored to stock 4.0.1 and it was back to the crazy good battery life, re jailbroke, and it's still fine. Now I will add my usual apps back one by one (lock info, sbsettings, winterboard, etc) to try to track it down.

Which leads me to my question: is there a list of known rogue or high battery draining apps out there? (I'm sure an led based app like spring flash could, if accidentally triggered, eat up a good bit of battery)

There's not really a list, but you should be able to figure out how much battery a program will drain by knowing what it does.

Also the LED doesn't use much battery, that's one of their major advantages.
