I did a forum search and did not find anything on point.

I just pulled a Konica Minolta Magicolor 2400w printer out of storage. It has not been used in close to 6 years. Plugged into my MBP running Mountain Lion, and it could see the printer but did not have a driver.

Minolta's web support for drivers is sketchy, and it looks like the last update of the driver was 2005. Since the vintage of the printer was the same, I tried it.

The printer installs and is visible to all apps, but when I go to print, the job gets stopped in the queue with a message saying 'Filter' failed.

This is a new one on me. What gives? Is there a generic driver that might work?

Filter is a unix/cups term for a part of a printer driver.
You can print using a third party driver. Install ghostscript and foomatic from linuxfoundation.org openprinting macosx section. Then, get the specific m2300w driver files (2300 works for 2400) from the openprinting printer database.
