So I've got an M1 Mac Mini as my own personal computer, and I just changed jobs, so they sent me some new monitors and a desktop PC. I grabbed a StarTech KVM switch, and it works absolutely flawlessly on the PC, but it needs to be unplugged and replugged into the Mac a few times a day. It switches screens fine, but my trackball will eventually stop working. I've got it plugged into a Caldigit TS3+, and I still get pop-up warnings a few times a day that something is drawing too much USB power, which makes no sense. Everything is plugged into the wall or the Caldigit, so I should have a tonne of power to spare.
I'm thinking of getting a powered KVM switch and hoping that helps, but basically everything of any quality at all seems to be (CDN) $400+.
The other option is to plug the monitor into HDMI on the Mac and DisplayPort on the PC and switch inputs manually, and then move the keyboard and mouse back and forth manually?
Anyone have any other decent solutions? Why is the Mac so weird about the KVM when the PC works just fine?
