l use OSX10.9.1 and want to know if can still access disk image if forgotten its pw?

I believe you can still access your computer if forgotten its login password, as detailed in : http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1274
but can I still access media in my disk image created using the disk utility if it is pw protected and pw forgotten?

oh dear, I will have to live without the media in it, so can I delete the disk image so can have more hard drive space?
I have another disk image which does not have a pw set up, how do l set a pw up for it? (I won't forget this pw!)
