I can only tell you that I've had great experience with WD and I haven't had any real experience with LaCie.

I have had no problems with my lacie.

Which lacie drive are you looking at as I only see the following..

LaCie Big Disk Extreme 1TB & LaCie d2 Quadra 1TB

i have a lacie d2 250GB in it's very loud and slow (to start, mount, shut down).

i have a 500GB WD studio and it's quiet and fast.

both on FW800. i'm only using the WD now. the lacie is my "off site" back up now.

i have seen the WD 1TB for $249 at costco recently.

I was interested in the WD Studio but being a Leopard user have decided to hold off as I have read MANY complaints about it not working properly under Leopard even with and updated driver and firmware.

It's a shame as the WD's are a lot cheaper per GB than the others I have looked at.

I have had no problems with WD Studio on Leopard since downloading and installing WD's February 2008 firmware update. It's a very competitive price, extremely quiet and access is fast using FireWire 800 connection with my MacBook Pro.
