Why does this external constantly wake up ever 20 min. even when I'm not accessing it? I have set up for Time Machine, and System Prefs>Energy Saver>Put Discs to Sleep checked. Time Machine backs-up every hour.

Would I be better off simply not having the disk sleep while the iMac is on? I'm thinking spinning up and spinning down is hard on the external HD.

Poor engineering

I have the same problem on my 2big Network. Stays on almost all the time, even if it's supposed to go into Eco mode after 5 minutes...

What I really find strange is when my iMac is sleeping the fan sometimes keeps going all night and all day even though nothing is accessing it. I usually just shut the drive down via the rocker panel switch, but sometimes I forget to turn it back on for Time Machine. Not good!

FYI: The USB3 version are fanless.. I wonder would it be OK to disconnect the fan on the older models.. lol
