I just bought one of these a week ago (1tb) and so far no problems. I backed up my powerbook and bunch of back up DVD's I had around, and it all went smoothly. What I liked about it, besides the obvious aesthetics is that it's fan less, so it can sit on my desk without making me crazy. Every once and a while it makes a bit of noise but I think it may be the hard drive. It has only been a week though, so we'll see how it goes I guess.:)

Did you get the firewire version?

No, I don't think the firewire one is fanless (or as cheap), and that was one of my big concerns. That said, transfers on it are little slow, but whatayagonnado...

I have the 500 GB external, and have been using it to store my Time Machine backups. I am very happy with it, it's very quiet and looks nice. The top of it does get ridiculously hot though, so don't put anything on top of it while it is running.

Which one do you have, the Western Digital or LaCie 500gb ?
