LaCie burner upgrade. Possible?

I have just been gifted an old LaCie Firewire CD burner and was wondering if anyone has had any experience or luck with upgrading one of these with a newer burner.

I am a little unsure on whether or not there is an issue with the control board inside the casing if I change the burner to a newer one (either DL DVD or just DVD).

If it helps I am using Toast and OS 10.4 for all burning thus far.
