My Lacie 1TB Big Disk just bailed and I need advice on getting something new. I have the dreaded flashing blue light. I am not sure what RAID is all about but my understanding is that if I got a RAID external HD that it would have some redundancy because it has two hard drives in it.

1. Can someone point me to a external hard drive that uses FW800 and has this RAID feature in it?

I don't know a lot about this and I just want something reliable most likely 2TB or more. What do you guys recommend?

OK, since no one seems to know how to do this, what is the most reliable way to back up your Mac using Time Machine?

i was faced with this not to long ago... its all about how much you want to spend and how you plan to back up data

most lower end drive are compatible with raid 0 or 1

raid 1 seem like what your aiming for but these can cost a lot for 2tb worth of data...

these consist of 2 hd's in which your saved data is on the frist hd is mirrored on the secound. so for 2tb of storage you really need a 4tb unit...

i ended up buying a 2tb G Drive that was not raid compatable beacuse i want to do muiltuple partions so i could make bootable copies of my os... i wanted to clear my imacs hd but still have access to some programes that where no longer free that i didnt use very offten or if internal hd craped out i could boot without any problem

If you dont go the raid route consider these options also:

also somthing that i wish i had though of before i bought my drive that might save you money was to by a drive reader and spearte drives for the external drive reader...

another thought if you got the cash is to get a drive reader and a solid state drive which might be more stable but im not sure just throwing that at there. Note that solid state drives are very very expensive.
