I have the newest MBA and I have been trying to play movies using air play mirroring through my AppleTV (about 2 years old). The mirroring works but when I try to play a movie with either VLC or QuickTime there is such a big lag that I end up turning it off. The lag comes and gos every few seconds, like it's queing up enough info to show then plays for a few seconds then there is a lag again of about 1-2 seconds. Its really annoying!
I'm thinking it's one of two issues, my AppleTv needs to be updated (unlikely) or the hardware/bandwidth to the device isn't big/fast enough.
I gave up trying to configure it and just bought a Thunderport to HDMI cable and it works fine now.
