Good heavens, some prankster spray painted a bunch of chickens black!

Not quite, as the rare Ayam Cemani Chicken is completely black from head to toe comb to talon.

The eyes, beak and even tongue are all jet black, while their feathers also shine emerald green in certain lights.

Amazingly, the chickens’ dark hue runs right through their core, with their bones, meat and organs also being black.

The birds, native to Indonesia, get their black colouring from a natural generic trait known as ‘fibromelanosis’.

Don’t get too excited though, because like all rare and beautiful things these chickens come with a price tag, and one will set you back $2500 (£1519).

Rare yes, beautiful no.

Would I be willing to eat a black chicken, nope. Doesn't seem all that appetizing to me.

We've got chickens, but none of them look like that when plucked. I just couldn't eat it. I also wouldn't eat a green one or a purple one. I do however have an EE hen that lays blue eggs.

Up until recently, we had a Silkie. (A fox attacked and the only hen not smart enough to run was the Silkie, go figure.) I can tell you there isn't enough meat on one of those things to feed a child.

the plucked black poultry in the second image must be the silkies. can't imagine having 10s of K of meat on a stand like that.

according to wiki, eggshells are white. i wonder if the yolk is black?

The Ayam Cemani chickens a nice lookers, but I've have my heart set on getting a Ayam Ketawa rooster, the so-called "laughing chicken", so I can drive my neighbors crazy.

In an effort not to upset my neighbors, I have all hens, no roosters. If anyone is actually interested in raising a couple of these chickens, it could be a lucrative business venture considering what the chicks go for, Greenfire Farm sells them here in the USA. You can get a juvenile pair for two grand.

Anyone considering buying "a juvenile pair" as a business investment might want to avoid following your "all hens, no roosters" practice. ;)
