Laptop DVR

Can you use a laptop (Mac or PC) as a DVR? I mean, just have the tv plug into it, or plug the laptop into a regular vcr or whatever, and have it record at a certain time, and then play it back later on your TV?

What would you need to do it?

You could buy an elgato eyetv that would allow you to do this. It could convert the analog tv signal into digital (firewire input), and then you could record it on your HD. Storage space is pretty limited on most laptops, so you may want to look into an external.

Anything that doesn't involve buying something? I was just wondering, cause my VCR was sucking it up, and I'm poor, so I was wondering if I can use what I have.
