Large amount of "other" taking up space.

Hi, I recently bought a MacBook Air and after installing the basics of word etc and doing an iphone backup I seem to have 27gb of 'other' on my hardrive.

Anyone know what this is/how to lower it?

That sounds about right. Other is essentially everything that does not fall within one of the other categories on that graphic like the OS and iOS backups you mentioned.
