What is the largest capacity HDD an iBook G4 can take? I've never seen one over 160Gb. Also, what kind of HDD do i need?

But in theory, if i could find a larger capacity that would physically fit, i would have no problems? I hear some of the older macs have a memory limit where even if you put a 500Gb drive, it would only show as the limit. Is this the case with G4s? Or is it just a hardware limitation?

Thanks!

In theory, sure. But I'm pretty sure the fact of the matter is that the drive manufacturers stopped increasing the capacity of the PATA/ATA 2.5" drives around that point when SATA drives became the norm.

This is true, manufacturers did indeed stop increasing capacity, but there are certain people with the technology to massively increase capacity if you know where to find them.

I suppose if you have the supar secret hookup to a home-made HDD maker, with left over new/high density SATA platters to transplant in to a PATA drive...?

:confused::confused:

Hardly a secret, i know of one company called SGW here in Oxford that makes them to order. Pretty expensive for what they are though.

A quick google search turns up nothing, but i have to go into town tomorrow anyway, so i'm gonna go check it out.
