I sent a few documents to my HP LaserJet 1012 printer this morning. To my surprise, I noticed smoke roaring up from the printer's insides. What is the world? I've never seen a printer catch on fire before!

I'm dissapointed. I loved my 1012. I guess I will try to find another model/brand to replace it with. Too bad it's not still under the original warranty (over 1 1/2 years old). Anyone else had a Laserjet catch on fire? :eek:

I am pretty sure ive heard of this before. it was something about toner residue starting it from the drum or something to that effect. Toner is a combustible powder so you should be careful when fire is around it.

to quote a Xerox Toner Study,

" Fire and Explosion Hazard Data
===========================================================================

Flash Point: NOT APPLICABLE
Extinguishing Media: WATER, DRY CHEMICAL, CARBON DIOXIDE OR FOAM.
Special Fire Fighting Proc: AVOID INHALATION OF SMOKE. WEAR PROTECTIVE
CLOTHING AND SELF-CONTAINED BREATHING APPARATUS.
Unusual Fire And Expl Hazrds: TONER IS A COMBUSTIBLE POWDER. LIKE MOST
ORGANIC MATERIALS IN POWDER FORM, WHEN DISPERSED IN AIR, IT CAN FORM
EXPLOSIVE MIXTURES. "

HP LaserJet smoking

Hi Joshuawaire,

What happened to you and your smoking printer ?

I have a laserjet 1010 purchased about 9 months ago, and I recently noticed some smoke as well, kind of light smoke, looked like water vapour, but I'm not sure. I kept on printing and 500 pages later, still the same smoke, but no other kind of problem. Might it be due to the quality or humidity of the pape r ?

Thanks !
