Laserjet printing difficulties

I have a PowerBook 15" Alum and a Laserjet 4m with localtalk. I'm using OS-10.2.8 and Appleworks, but the problem occurs in other software as well.

I'm unable to print JPG or TIFF images. The file is sent to the printer and all the lights blink. Then after a long time the lights stop blinking and nothing comes out.

I have to convert them to .PICT grayscale images before they'll print.

Also, there's no way to adjust the printer (postscript) for brightness or contrast.

Can anyone help?
