As a Spaniard, I especially appreciate this often forgotten group of heroes who fought for freedom, regardless of flags and borders.

The Spanish Civil War is forgotten in America today. That is unfortunate, because while it was your civil war, it greatly influenced American politics, culture, and literature.

And possibly it was the last time Republicans were the "good guys"?

...only if you call a group advised by the NKVD "good." But yea, it's odd the Republicans are the lefties.

Well, not forgotten by SOME of us.

Indeed, however with all the WWII nostalgia of the past 20 years, the Espana Guerrero hasn't received much attention.

It's still very much the case in Spain, where republicans whant to get rid of the monarchy and restore a republic. Just like "liberals" which depending on the context and the country, can have two very different meanings. Or -to an extent- socialism.

That's interesting. (I should also note that not all Republican forces were advised by the Russians.)
