Last version of Pages can not read Pages 2009 document?

Just bought an imac and send someone a pages document. He bought his mac 1 1/2 years ago so I guess he has last version of Pages. Still this is Apple not microsoft. They had to make the new version of Pages using an incompatible format? Or is this one of those Cocoa vs....whatever issues?
