I have a late 2007 black MacBook with DDR2 PC2-5300 RAM. Can I swap in some DDR3 PC3-8500 RAM left over from my newer MBP? This swap would increase my MB RAM from 1 to 4 GB.

No, as 200-pin DDR2 SO-DIMM RAM is physically different from 204-pin DDR3 SO-DIMM RAM, not only by 4 pins, but by its entire architecture.

Thanks for the bad news. :(
The MB has a 2.2 GHz Core 2 Duo processor. Is it worth it to buy 4GB of DDR2 RAM? The MB is used mostly for web browsing and audio and video streaming.

Yes, it is worth it, as 1 GB of RAM is abysmal, even with Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger or Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

You can upgrade to Lion (10.7.x) but not Mountain Lion (10.8.x). However some people have managed to install Mountain Lion on their Late 2007 MacBook, but it's a hack and not everything works right.
