For the past few days whenever my MacBook reaches anywhere between 45-50% battery remaining it just dies. Any clue as to what could be the case?

I'm considering upgrading real soon. This might just push me to do so.

Chances are the battery is dead. Another possibility is it needs calibrating. See what it tells you under the System Report (Apple Menu-About this Mac-More info...-System Report-Power-Health Information)
