Late 2008-macbook pro Display

Hi i am pretty new to mac laptops. I heard from a fellow student in college that on the old mac book pro you can just hook up an external display and you can go between both the laptops screen and the external display. My question is with the new Late 2008-macbook pro with the new mini display port is that still possible.
