Late 2008 macbook pro to monitor

Hello,

Hope someone can help.
I was thinking about purchasing a 2012 iMac because I wanted a bigger monitor.
However it just dawned on me that I already have a late 2008 macbook pro with a SSD that is still pretty quick for it's age. So i'd just like some advice on what I need to do to hook it up to a bigger monitor and what sort of quality I can expect and what cables i'd need etc?

Max resolution supported by a second monitor is 2560 x 1600 via display port.

Thank you. Do you know what adapter I need and what method of connectivity would give the best picture quality?

I would go with mini display port to DVI or HDMI with a 1080p monitor. I'm not sure how well the MacBook can drive a higher resolution monitor.
