I have one of the first generation unibody MacBook Pro's (I bought it in April 2009, a few weeks before the second gen ones were released), with a mini displayport. I'd like to connect this up to a TV and get audio from the laptop through the TV speakers.

I've done a search on Google and the forum and the general consensus seems to range from its not possible to it is possible, as the mDP doesn't directly provide audio, unlike the newer generation laptops.

What is the best way of getting audio and video into the HDMI socket on my TV? I don't mind if this ties up a USB port as well. Can anyone recommend any adapters?

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the reply. I'm not bothered about 5.1, as my TV only has stereo speakers.

Are these adapters usually quite reliable?
