I have a late 2009 iMac 2.8ghz i7 loaded up with 1tb hdd, 12 gb ram, etc. I'm thinking of upgrading imacs. I found a 2011 2.7 i5 for $1350.

Do you think it's worth the upgrade? Would a current model 2.7 i5 be faster than an '09 2.8 i7? I do a lot of Final Cut and a ton of Aperture work. Thanks!

I rather just upgrade with a SSD hard drive and stay with the 2.8 i7

Generally, sandy bridge will be faster then your current i7 but slightly, i suggest you to stick with your current i7 until the Ivy Bridge comes out. Its rumored to use i5 3570 and i7 3770. i5 3570 alone will smoke your i7 for good. ;)

According to CPUbenchmark, the 2009 i7 2.8 (860) has a benchmark of 5628, while the 2011 i5 2.7 (2500s) has a benchmark of 5119.

Given that you already have 12gb of ram, I doubt you would see much of an increase in speed, if any.

I would consider spending the money on an SSD, with which you definitely WILL see an increase in speed, for less money!

So I can get an 128gb ssd drive for just $94 on Amazon. I think maybe I'll go that route. Seems better than losing a few hundred on the sale of my current Mac and buying a new i5. That way it ought to hold me over for a long while I'm guessing.
