Late 2011 13" MBP display port not full screen?

Hi, I've got a late 2011 13" MBP, just the base model 2.4 i5, 16gb ram...

I bought a display port to hdmi adapter which works superb, so easy but on my Panasonic 42" plasma I get black bars down each side when running any of the native resolutions.

I want to run 1080p (1920x1080) which is natively supported on the TV but it still gives black bars.

I tried overscan on MBP display settings and played round with the TV settings and nothing helps.

Am I missing something obvious here? How do I get 1920x1080 to fill my 1080p TV screen?

It's Panasonic tx-p42st30 1080p 3d TV.

Are your mirroring your display by any chance? If so, both screens will go to the lowest resolution of the two, in this case it's the MBP's.

Yes mirroring. Okay that explains it. Any way to fix it? Mostly for playing movies back from iTunes, don't need MBP screen to be on too.

If you have an external keyboard and mouse, just close the lid with the TV plugged in.

Otherwise turn off mirroring.
