Late-2011 MacBook Pro’s and Snow Leopard

Has any member here performed a software downgrade from the pre-installed Lion 10.7.2 to Snow leopard 10.6.8 on any late-2011 MacBook Pro (any size) and if it was successful or failed and what you found? Thank you.

Installing 10.6 on any Mac that supports it is straight forward, since it was still the DVD era where the OS install was on a disk, which you can easily make a disk image, copied on a USB thumb drive or external drive to be installed / boot from.

10.7 does not care if it is wiped when you do the 10.6 install. In fact I think the 2011 can go further back to 10.5.

I haven’t tried it but I reckon it should be possible. You would need one of two methods though:

• Original restore discs for Early 2011 models. That way should be easiest.
• Target disc mode (or removing the internal drive) and connecting it to another Snow Leopard supported computer. Then you install Snow Leopard and update to 10.6.8.

I'm getting a late-2011 next week and will try it with original install discs from 10.6.0 to 10.6.7 I have many version of, but which should I use the earlier versions or later versions? And some of these discs are from Mac Mini packages so will they work on an MBP or MBA for that matter since I have to do the same on a mid-2011 MBA?

Ideally you will need to use discs from a Sandy Bridge Mac (I think 10.6.7+). Anything less than that won’t boot. Furthermore, I believe only discs from a 2011 MacBook Pro and iMac have Snow Leopard FaceTime. You could use other versions to install, but you would need to update to 10.6.8 if you do, because the version of 10.6.7 they came with is special and has support for these computers.
