I have a Late-2011 MacBook Pro running Yosemite (v10.10.3) and an HP W2071d 20" display connected via Mini-display port to VGA cable. Everything works normally.

I just bought a Mid-2014 MacBook Pro running the latest El Capitan (v10.11.3) and when I plug the display in, the MBP recognizes (which you can see in System Pref > Displays) but the display is just blank.

Any thoughts?

Try a mini displayport to DVI cable. I have some monitors that only work one way or the other.

I heard that too but the monitor worked fine with my 2011 MacBook Pro. Why wouldn't it work with a newer model?

Bought a DVI to Mini Displayport cable...everything works fine now. Not sure why the VGA didn't work on my newer MBP though.
