I know this has been discussed before, but I needed a little clarification. Is it possible to install snow leopard from a 13" early 2011 onto a 15" late 2011 using target disk mode and the early 2011's grey disks?

I know it's been done before with an early 15" restore disks, but I don't have access to any

Yes.

Install SL from your grey disks onto the 13", update to 10.6.8, connect to the 15" through target disk mode, and use your software of choice to clone your system from the 13" hard disk onto the 15" hard disk.

Cloning software that works for this is Carbon Copy Cloner and Super Duper.

Alternatively, if you want to do it for free (because neither of those pieces of software is free anymore), you can take the hard drive from the 15" and put it into the 13", install SL from your grey disks onto the hard drive in the 13", update to 10.6.8, then swap the hard drive back into the 15".

I will be swapping my SSD from the 13" which is running 10.6.8, so will it swap directly to the 15" without issue? Ultimately that would be easiest of all options
