My 2012 27" iMac has been fantastic, but earlier this year it started generating a rattling noise at idle to just above idle (1200-1300 RPMs).
I bought the tape kit, pulled the thing apart, cleaned the fan and heatsink, oiled the bushing, yanked the 1TB WD hard drive and replaced it with at 1TB Samsung 850 Pro SSD, leaving the 128GB for Windows. The whole thing was a piece of cake and was as quite as new.
Fast-forward 5 months, the rattle is back.
I was disappointed to see the fan had a bronze bushing instead of a shielded ball bearing. In my experience, no amount of oiling or greasing this bushing will be a long term fix. Once they're wore out and rattling, it's a sign that the hole has been worn out of tolerance. I took a chance oiling it, and now I'm facing pulling this thing apart again.
What I would like to do is replace the bushing with a high quality ceramic bearing of equal size. Has anyone measured the dimensions of the bushing with a set of calipers? I'm sure it's a fairly common bearing size in the world or radio-contral cars, most likely metric. I would like to purchase the bearing and have it ready before I take this thing apart again.
Thanks!
