I'm a freelance editor and have used my Late 2013 MBP for 5 years and really have no complaints. I edit a lot of cheeky publicity videos and don't need a hog of a computer to handle the minor things I cut so its worked nicely. Recently I've come into possession of a Late 2012 machine and it has a faster processor and more SSD space but that's about all. Here is the comparison:

Late 2012 MBP 13in Retina
2.9 GHz i7
8GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024mb
512 SSD

Late 2013 MBP 13in Retina
2.4 GHz i5
8GB RAM
Intel Iris 1536mb
128 SSD

Wondering what you guys think is the better machine, I guess I'm wondering if the i7 makes much of a difference for me and what I use my MBP for. I usually just use FCPX and some other minor programs.

The disk in the 2013 is a lot faster than the one in the 2012, even though it's a lot smaller. The real world difference in processor speed is probably actually minimal. The graphics performance in the 2013 is quite a bit faster as well.
You can upgrade the disk in the 2013 with an adapter; personally I'd probably keep the 2013.

This is what I figured but more disk space isn't really important to me because I edit only on external RAIDs

I suggest to go to 15in Late 2013 model with dedicated GPU. I am using the same machine since I bought it new and never had issue on anything. The OS is on Yosemite and not update the OS at all.
Bought the machine in July 2014 2.6GHz/16GB/1TB with AMD GPU. It runs like a champ other than the display started to delaminate in 2018 that got worse in October but apple said they no longer replace the devices older than 4 years. So, added privacy filter to make it look fine. Delaminate is not a issue if it is powered up.
Now, you can get the 2013 or 2014 model with around $1000 yet if clean low cycle devices cost a little more. Grab these while you can and clean. Do not think updates are good for users.

Does this have a dedicated GPu?
