Hello all,

Let a friend use my old Macbook and he's recently spilled something on it. This seems to have killed the backlight. Display works with flashlight test (through the logo), and connecting an external screen via hdmi seems to work just fine as well. After doing some Googilng (already tried PRAM/NVRAM reset, and SMC reset) I figure we've got a bad pfuse/logic board due to the spill.

Does anyone have even a rough idea what it would cost to have Apple repair it? Depending on the cost I'm thinking about just getting a logic board from ifixit and replacing the board myself. Thoughts?

Thanks.

Louis Rossman is the cheapest and best when it comes to these repairs.

Buying a new logic board alone will cost almost as much if not more than buying the same model used on eBay.

You're better off buying a new laptop, even if it's the same model. And let the friend pay for it.

Sorry for the VERY late reply but thank you for your answer. Yeah just decided not to bother fixing it and keep it connected to an external screen. I'm not even worried about it honestly, but let him use it I pretty much mean I gave it to him.
