Hello!
And as this is my first post to the forum, if here is already a similar topic please link it to me. I did a quick search but as I have couple of specific questions, I decided to make my own post.
So, I have a Late 2013 iMac 27" 3,2 Ghz i5, 24GB DDR, 1TB Fusion Drive.
Lately the machine has been running slow. One reason might be that I don't actually have tons of space left on my HDD. But I also ran a test with an app called Drive Dx and it told me that the HDD is soon failing.
That's when I started to think about upgrading my HDD into SSD. When I then did a little googling, I found out that the machine has this nvme M2 SSD-blade. I'm not sure about the size of this one (in Gigabytes)? And then of course there sits the 1TB HDD.
Now the main questions:
- Is it wise to update the HDD into an SSD? I was thinking to upgrade it to some 2,5" 2 TB SSD. Is there any differencies between different brands/modells? I found from a nearby store a good prize for Samsung 860 QVO SSD 2 Tb, would that be a good choise?
- Do I need a wire/adapter for the cables because of a thermal sensor? I read something about the fans going to full speed without an adapter, but I am unsure if it is the case with this Late 2013 modell also.
- Do I need to do anything for the nvme M2 SSD-blade? Is it worth changing it to a bigger one (now that I don't know what the current size is...). What I found out also is that the card has some specific "apple connection", so I would need to get an apple branded card or is there adapters around? And do they work...
- If I decide to replace the HDD with SSD, do I need to later split the SSD and the M2 SSD (fusion drive) into 2 different drives or to continue as it is now (showing only as one drive for the user)?
One guy told me that he would upgrade the M2 SSD to some 400-500 GB and then put a normal HDD with 8 Tb capacity inside, that this would be the best option. I kind of doubt this, as the SSD is so much quicker...
Thank you in advance for your replies.
