Dear Forum Members,

I have a Late 2013 iMac running macOS Mojave. I am now on a 7200 rpm Internal Hard Disk and I would like to upgrade it to 8 Terrabyte SSD Hard Disk.

I don't know if it is possible or not. The maximum terabyte that late 2013 iMacs have a limit? For instance, maybe I cannot upgrade more than 4 Terrabyte of SSD in late 2013 iMacs, etc... I hope I made myself clear.

Thank you much upfront.

:)

Do you really need that much internal storage?
I don't see an 8tb SSD as being very cost effective...

I am working with a lot of audio so I really need that storage.
I would say too risky - single point if failure if your livelyhood depends on it. I would consider using Lacie via Thunderbolt or usb 3 for your audio files. I would still upgrade that internal HDD to ssd though.

That sounds like a very expensive upgrade to an almost 10 year old iMac. Wouldn't it make more sense to get a new (or newer) computer, with the storage you require?

The current (intel) iMac can be configured with up to 8TB SSD, so the replacement iMac with Apple Silicon will certainly have at least the same capability. That would give you an up-to-date reliable computer with much more future usability.

I suppose that, if the price is as reasonable as others are suggesting, maybe it is not an unreasonable thing to do?

The original question is still valid then - is it possible for this vintage iMac? I don't know the answer to that myself, but others here can probably help.

If you truly need an 8TB, just get an external USB3 or Thunderbolt enclosure and run it externally. You'll thank yourself later on when you can move it to a new Mac or PC with no issues.

Just checked a Samsung 8 TB SSD and they have one for $710 so the cost per TB is below $100. I'm mildly stunned.
The Samsung 870 QVO 8TB SSD has a R/W speed of 560/530 MB/s. This is within the USB3 realm of speed, so you gain nothing by opening it up and installing it inside the iMac.

I'm not the original poster. My approach is just hang it off a USB-3 port. I'm doing that right now with a 2010 iMac 27 except it's a USB-2 port.

I have a dead Fusion Drive in my 2012 iMac 27". I reformatted it so I can use the 128GB SSD as my boot drive.

Problem with this is that macOS 10.15 Catalina refuses to boot when it detects the dead HDD so I'm stuck on macOS 10.14 Mojave.

I have the OWC internal storage kit that was bought in 2017 but never gotten around to installing it.

I'll give your suggestion a try tomorrow with the unused external USB3 2TB SSD tomorrow.

So, in other words, my late 2013 iMac could be installed with an 8 TB SSD Hard Disk. Yes?
