My MBP is running Mojave. Every time upon startup when I hold down alt/option I and choose MacIntosh HD I get to my logon screen. After I enter my password it sometimes boots me to my desktop other times a white line moves from left to right slowly and eventually I get a circle with a slash through it. Other times it shuts down.
I've run First Aid and it sees no issues.
While in Disk Uitility does not see the hard drive in in recovery mode.

Any suggestions on why I'm having these issues is appreciated.

Mojave uses APFS. Since Disk Utility in the Recovery can not see the Mojave drive then it sounds like it might be a older version that can not see APFS.

Boot in Recovery, launch Disk Utility and check "About Disk Utility" to get the version number. Let us know what version it is.
