Well ladies and gentlemen, after years of resisting Apple I spent nearly $4000 this fall, and my worst nightmare has come to pass.

When working with the PC with anything that is a grey or black color, I get this ugly 2 tone image on the entire display.

This does not effect my secondary display at all.
I have reset the PRAM or whatever... I called apple about this about a month or two ago, and they sent me instructions to reset the hardware in the unit.

Nothing happened.
This is a real problem for me.

Anyhow, I do have applecare, but what are the next steps, and has anyone had this issue before?

I really hope someone can shed some light on this, so bumping it after over 12 hours of no replies.

Looks like the split backlight is uneven as heck. Your going to need a new screen or entire unit. going to have to hit up Apple or run it into an Apple Store. Ive had the same issue in an iMac Pro

If that two tone thing is present more than intermittently, it’s probably hardware, in which case you need to get Apple or an authorized service provider to repair it under AppleCare.

The next steps would be calling Apple Support and saying you’d like it repaired. When they start walking you through the reset steps, tell them you’ve already tried that and it didn’t help. If you get a difficult rep, hang up and try on another day. You shouldn’t have any issues having this repaired though, other than covid-related logistic issues.

There's apparently some image retention there?
As others have said, you can try a repair. That image retention, if it is present, can mean replacing the screen. Apple will likely do that as a warranty repair. You might have to "stick to your guns", as Apple sometimes will call that within normal range of use. But, you can show it directly affects your video editing. Your usage, particularly when you need consistent images, should help Apple understand what you need (a good display)

It’s a software bug, disable and enable true tone in settings and it will be fine.
