Latest Mac OS iDVD will run on?

Bought a Mid-2009 13" MBP for converting 8mm and Digital8 home movies to DVD.

I originally planned on just using 10.6.8 but it would be nice to have iMessage on the machine.

What is the newest Mac OS that will smoothly run iDVD and iMovie HD (iMovie 6) without any kind of hacks?

I'll be doing a clean install of the OS and have the iLife '09 DVD.

Okay, I've answered my own question. Yosemite messes up iMovie 6. Mavericks is the latest that will properly run iMovie 6 and iDVD.

Any advantage to installing Mavericks vs Mountain Lion? This will not be my main machine.

Mavericks is one year newer, so it should get one year longer of support (minor security updates), but that may be all you notice. It handles RAM much better than ML.
