Amazon in the UK have a1523 on sale at the moment. Is this the latest iteration or an older one?

There is only *one* current version of the AirPods available, which is the first generation AirPods that launched in December 2016.

False.

Apple already made a small update to the AirPods since their initial release. It didn't warrant a new name, but they were in fact already updated once.

Not aware of this.

Only updates I've seen are software (adding extra Tap Commands etc.) & firmware.

This is incorrect. It would behoove you to re-read what the OP asked, there is one current model version of the Airpods and _always_ has been since their inception in 2016. There has never been any physical changes to the Airpods since Decemebr 2016. Read Apples manufacturing Note, it lists them as a ‘2016’ model only.

@s54 is incorrect and Misread the OP’s opening post. There is only one current version of the Airpods available, which Apple even lists the manufacturing Note on their website as a ‘2016 model.’

Apple has however, Granted two firmware updates,

One was on May 24, 2017:

And the first update was on February 1, 2017:
