I installed LaTeX on my Mac via MacTex distribution however i can't get the inputenc package to work. Every time i type a ç, or an à or anyother latin char it gives an error while typsetting.

Did you used the package \usepackage[applemac]{inputenc} ???
you can replace applemac by ansinew if you are working on windows...

O, I don't think you have been thanked properly for this answer so I had to register just to do it... This also applies if you want to have Swedish characters on mactex, ie \usepackage[applemac]{inputenc} instead of \usepackage[swedish]{inputenc}
The complete Swedifying would be:
\usepackage[applemac]{inputenc}
\usepackage[T1]{fontenc}
\usepackage[swedish]{babel}
