Launchd jobs OSX Server

Hi Guys,

Having an annoying issue with a Launchd job i created. I created the plist file and saved it in /library/launchdaemons. All it does is call a bash script and run an rsync command. The rsync command is
rsync -av /volume/userdata/files /volume/userdata/backup.

The job launches fine and runs right through, i have a log file so i can see what has been copied. The problem being every time it runs via launchd it copies everything over each time. If i just go to the directory where the bash script is located and run it via the terminal it only copies the modified files if any. Just to throw another spanner in the works, if i throw an 'n' or dry run command into the bash script and run it via launchd the log file displays that no files would need to be copied which is of course correct!

My main question is why when the bash script is run via launchd why does it copy everything over but show me that it wont if i do a dry run, i have not set it to run as sudo or anything like that either.

Hope someone may have an idea to what i am doing wrong

Well for the command to backup all the files under the files directory to the backup directory I would use.

rsync -av /Volumes/userdata/files/* /Volumes/userdata/backup/

Now this would backup everything under the files to the backup directory hopefully the volume you had in there is a typo when posting here. Also why the verbose output in a script that will run in the background that is not necessary. Now it is not the Apple way of doing things these days but I would give a cronjob a try with a crontab -e in Terminal with something like this as the entry.

@daily /path/to/rsync/script.sh

This will run it once a day at midnight you could have it run anytime you choose using an example in the page linked below if wanting to change it to a different time of day to run or use @hourly for every hour running. As well I would make sure that the owner of the files and backup directories are the same user that userdata in the path has me wondering if there are multiple owners in there.

The rsync command is
rsync -av /volume/userdata/files /volume/userdata/backup...
i have not set it to run as sudo or anything like that either.

What is the exact syntax you're using in your LaunchDaemon and script?
Also, LaunchDaemons always run as root so sudo is superfluous there. If you have a command that should run as the logged in user, it goes in LaunchAgents.

Many thanks for the in-depth reply. I see what you mean about the v flag, its not really required so will remove that for sure. As for the directory themselves they were just made up but i will post them exactly how they are.
/volume/userdata/work-files (this is the source directory, which is a physical drive in the MAC server) /volume/userdata/backup-userdata/work-files (this is a seagate network nas) I did try putting smb://192.168.1.5/userdata/backup-userdata/work-files instead of having the name 'volume' in the command line incase that was causing the issue but the same thing happened.

The files will have a lot of different owners i guess as these are all the company files, i am not running the command as sudo just as the regular admin account on the server.

I will have a look a cron but from what i understood launchd has taken over from cron. I kept getting cron errors saying it wasnt there when i did look into trying to set up a job.

chrfr - Hi mate, just saw your post as i replied to the first comment, i will try what you mention as that could be the culprit! i have pasted my plist script below so you can see.

I have just tried moving the launchd plist to the launchagents folder and run it from there instead and it appears to be doing the same thing copying all the files over.

Now your positive that is not /Volumes? That is the only way I have ever seen it in OSX having never used the server variety who knows perhaps they have changed it there. Now the IP should not be required if you see that nas in the /Volumes directory already mounted in the OSX server. What kind of files system is on the nas? If not HFS+ you could be running into errors due to the permissions/attributes not being copied over properly making the rsync command think it needs to copy all the files but you say it goes well from command line so it has to be something to do with the user running the launchd messing it about.

Apologies i missed the 's' of volume you are correct.

As for the filesystem on the nas, its a seagate central box so i believe it just NTFS. Its not mounted or anything it shows up down the side of finder as a shared device named 'Backup' If i double click it i can connect to it with the required credentials. I have also tried mapping the nas via IP over smb as well which again displays the device in finder under the shared tab.

Like you mention i thought it may be due to permissions etc but it works via the command line just fine when its run that way. I could try creating the plist file again to see if it makes any difference but i cant see that it would. When i edit the file i do i via sudo and when i load and unload the file via launchd i have to use the sudo command otherwise it wont let me but thats the only time sudo is used. Its not used in the bash script at all.

Your welcome. You have something weird going on there it works fine here.

What does the output of whoami show you in Terminal where you are doing the crontab -e. It should say root since that is what it was telling you it was creating the entry for.

This is the main admin account terminal result, i done crontab -l and this is what i get

I then hit crontab -e and select 'A' to edit and put in this 01 10 * * * /Users/admin/desktop/backups/work-backup.sh hit 'ESC' then :wq to exit.

Well that is progress you have job there, can you post the script? I found this while searching around last night on this idea was going to post it then but got caught up in the election results here. I am thinking that this method can be what you need to just connect to the server. Even if you get it to poll every hour or so or for that matter when the rsync job runs it can first try to detect then load if not connected the server. BTW just do a test job like I showed earlier once you confirm that entry works then you can fine tune the script/time it executes later.

Thanks again for that info, i shall check out the link for sure. It seems to be working ok and i set it to run at 01:05 and the log file showed that it ran which was good. The only problem i am finding now is again that when the job is run via cron it seems to copy all the files instead of the updated ones. If i was to run the same rsync command in the bash script just manually in the terminal it would only copy the modified files which is what i want. Very strange behaviour indeed.

The script i use is below

#!/bin/bash
#Work Backup
rsync -av /Volumes/User\ Data/Work /Volumes/admin/BACKUP-User\ Data --log-file=/Users/admin/Desktop/Backups/fennes-backup.log

Your welcome. Strange is not the word that command should be ran identically on both runs of the script. Now when looking at the output in the log how are you determining it was actually copying the file. Does it show such and such file was copied? Because rsync will show output on a file that can be copied over into the log even if no transfer has occurred. I see that all the time when syncing up my files it shows that it has processed the file by there is/was no transfer involved and if that output is being redirected into the log file well you can think it is doing copy but it is not.

Edit: So added a --log-file to one of my scripts deleted file off of spare machine that has the first copy of my backups.

That is what I saw so no stray output is re-directed to answer my own question. In that case if you are seeing that output like I did I do not think I have a clue on why unless it is as I was thinking earlier some kind of ownership/permission of the user running the script process messing it about. Perhaps a comparison of the user/owner/group on the destination to the source would be in order. Rsync has ignore options for them I had to set the no group option once when it was doing similar to me. Do not remember if it was copying data at the time or just having to change the group though. Ah and while I am thinking options I noticed no --delete in the rsnc line that removes deleted files on the source from on the destination thus freeing up that space for files you want to keep. Otherwise the deleted on source files will stay on the destination forever if not manually deleted.

Thanks for testing this really appreciate your time mate. Done a little test myself and maybe what is actually being logged in the log file isnt necessarily being copied. I have an example below, i have pasted an image of the command window and the rsync command i used. You can see from the command windows what files were updated and it looks right to me so im happy with that.

Just curious to know why all these files are appearing in the log really considering the actual terminal window showed only the updated files?

Your welcome. It looks like it is that stupid group thing I mentioned already from the f .....g in the lines. Looking at the sent 1242bytes at the bottom it is copying next to nothing that is 1.2kb sent so it is as I suspected just "junk" output in there to confuse a person into thinking that something is being copied when in fact is is not. Your good to go it is not copying anything but the group changes, think it is --no-group you put in the line to stop that, been awhile since I looked at the man page though you may want to check that if it gives you error when put in the line.
