I was using my 2015 15-inch MacBook Pro today when the screen started to glitch out with artifacts, so I immediately started to record it with my iPhone. After a few minutes, a black vertical bar appeared and eventually the whole screen went white with vignetting in the corners. I thought maybe it was software, and I had an update waiting anyway, so I went ahead and installed that hoping a reboot might reset something and fix it. No such luck. When I connect hdmi the picture looks fine, so the igpu/dgpu must be good.

Looking around on eBay, screen assemblies go for $600... I'm searching ebay for entire computers for parts, unfortunately cracked lcds are common. Maybe I should get a working computer for closer to $1k, take the screen, and resell the rest on ebay? idk... Does anyone have any better ideas for a cheaper fix?

Here’s the video if your interested:

Thanks!

How do you know the display is bad? The symptoms you described could also be a bad video cable or connection. In either case, video output to an external monitor would be okay. Go to www.ifixit.com and take a look at the disassembly instructions for your MacBook Pro, buy the necessary tools from them, take the machine apart and check.

How old is your macbook? More than 4 years?
I’m not sure as I’m not the original owner, so I’m assuming it’s 5 years old.

I wondered about that when it happened so I did take the bottom panel off and reseat the cable but it didn’t make a difference.

To understant is it display or Cable - you must replace the LVDS Cable.
It is not so hard.

Strangely tonight my MacBook pro booted up and the display is working perfect! I'm not sure what's happening.

This is the best guide I could find for the LVDS cable, is this what you mean?

And this part? https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Mac/MacBook-Pro-Retina-2012-2015-Display-LVDS-Cable/IF123-115?o=1

It could be the beginning of the end of your graphics card. I fried a graphics card before on an older mac and it was acting flakey on and off (intermittenly) like yours until it finally gave out for good. Hard to say.

Just a quick update in case anyone else has this issue. I disabled the automatic graphics switching in the energy saver section of system preferences and that totally fixed the issue, it must have been the integrated graphics that went bad. Sure it's not a permanent fix, but it'll buy you some more time!
