Hey all.

So I may need a new LCD, but before I do, maybe I can fix my current one.

The problem began when I got the infimous gradient caused by one set of LED's being brighter than another set. I managed to live with this for a while, but then the LCD packed up altogether.

Now the display itself still works, shine a torch on it and you can see that it still works. Also, the LED's come on briefly at start up or when I wake up the mac, but then go off again.

This led me to conclude that it's a problem with the part that controls the LED's on/off status.

So my inquiries are thus:

Should I attempt to fix whatever part of the LCD is causing the LED's to malfunction (I have a friend who can help me) in the assumption that the particular part has come loose/whatever. Or does the 'gradient' I had beforehand indicate that that part is done for?

If I need to replace the whole LCD, where do I get one at a reasonable price? I have a mid-2007 20" iMac, but have been unable to find anything decent online.

ALSO:

I'm thinking of replacing my HDD with something bigger. But I'm also thinking of dropping in an SSD to run OSX from, and use the HDD for storage. Am I able to install an SSD in place of my optical drive?
