My brother dropped his 5.5 generation iPod Video. The LCD is busted, but otherwise, it works fine. I see all sorts of sites that say they replace iPod screens for around $100. My local Mac retailer doesn't do it. What is the best option for having this done? Can a technically inclined person order the part and do the repair?

NO!! Don't buy from iFixit. They're charging $40 for a USED one! When I fixed my dad's, I bought one off eBay for about $25 NEW. Hope it helps!

I watched a how to video and it doesn't look too difficult. Of course I've heard that there are all sorts of potential pitfalls when taking iPods apart. Is the risk of messing something up overblown?

I think finding a good deal on eBay is your best bet. It's really not that hard to replace an LCD as long as you're careful.
