LCD TV Hook-up Problem- Help

I own a new 13" MB and a Samsung 40" a550 LCD TV.

i bought a Mini-port-to-DVI cable and a DVI-to-HDMI.

I hooked the HDMI into the 2nd monitor HDMI-slot on the back of the TV and the Mini-port into the MB.

I can only get the TV to display the "standard" Mac desktop background -the one thats the picture of outer-space (purple & blues). but i cant get anything to show up on the screen other that just that desktop background. nothing else shows up. Halp!
