LCD TV ok for a Mac Pro?

I'm deciding between an iMac and a MacPro. I wanted to "cheap out" on the pro and avoid buying a monitor. I was thinking of using my Sharp 42" 1080p TV. The TV does dot by dot via HDMI or accepts 1600 x 1200 via VGA. I was going to use a DVI to HDMI cable if I go HDMI. Would this work? Would the print be readable? Is the screen too big? Is 1920 x 1080p an ok resolution to use for the MacPro? Things I should be aware of? Sorry for the dumb questions, first computer purchase since the original mac mini and my current computer monitor is a 7 year old CRT.
