LCS replacement feasibility

A buddy of mine has a quad core 2.5 with a failing LCS. What is the feasibility of replacing the lcs with the air cooling from a dual 2.0?

I've heard second hand reports of it being done, but I've never read about it being done. It might work, but the fans may always running fast due to high heat output or in safe mode due to lack of temperature readings from sensors that don't exist anymore.
