I just tried Mercury and it rocks! But the java is SOOOO slow even on the G5 iMac.
I'm waiting for the new reason - 1709 i believe. I don't want the Beta cause I dont want to bug up my new computer :) :)

usually not the best to talk about things like this on MR, kinda against the mods' wishes

Personally (not speaking as a mod), I'd love to get a beta of MSN 5 :D

However, I don't think it's up to the beta stage yet. They're porting it to Xcode from CodeWarrior, and I believe it's basically an all-or-nothing type of thing.

I really hate the current version of messenger, I've been using Adium which I think is awesome, especially as it's open source there are loads of additional scripts and add ons and they claim to be working towards supporting video.

Anyway, if messenger's next update will be anything like the last, we're all in for a good laugh. But for convenience sake, it would be awesome if it supported video for Mac.

Cheers

Any word on whether it's going Cocoa or not in the process?

I can't imagine Messenger 5 standing up to any of the other Mac chat apps. It sounds as though they are basically just adding display pictures to Messenger 4.

What still isn't available?

Webcam Support (not expected till 2006 in Messenger 6 for Mac)
Audio Conversations
Sending Custom Emoticons
Animated Emoticons
Backgrounds, packs, games, winks etc...
Ink Messaging

Help an ignorant sole here please. Is beta technology illegal? I would have thought, since Messenger is free anyway, that Microsoft wouldn't mind people, particularly those with a bit of development background, using their beta products.

While I tend use aMSN and Adium for long periods of time, I find that they don't feel anywhere near as stable, and simple, and, dare I say it, elegant, as MSN Messenger 4.

MSN Messenger is fine if you just wanna chat and check your Hotmail email. In fact, in my opinion, it performs those two functions far better than any other instant messenger.

For now I'll be sticking to aMSN (for the emoticons, display pictures, and the 'see-who's-deleted-you' icon) and Adium (for the display pictures and spellcheck support). However, should Microsoft include any of the aforementioned features in the next version of MSN Messenger, it'll be the only instant messenger in my currently overcrowded dock.
